After years of community feedback, input and planning, DPS is moving forward with the return of a comprehensive high school to the Montbello neighborhood. The DPS Planning, Design and Construction team has announced the first phase of the new Montbello High School construction, which is slated to extend from June to August 2022. A more extensive second phase will begin in the fall 2022, with the overall construction project expected to be completed in 2024.
Inspired by the Montbello name itself, meaning "beautiful mountain," the architecture will incorporate soaring lines and natural light to create an inviting space for all. The updated campus will join together new and renovated spaces to create a state-of-the-art building. The project will include the construction of new learning environments as well as a new student commons, cafeteria, gym, and library media center. The school will also incorporate renovations of the existing gyms, pool, and auditorium.
The first phase of construction will focus on preparing existing classroom pods for the school to utilize during the 2022-23 and 2023-24 school years. Abatement, utility relocation and construction of a hard dividing wall between the construction zone and the student-occupied area will also be prioritized to prepare for the second phase of construction. In addition, a new parking area, delivery drive, and construction fencing will be installed during this time.
