CPR/AED Training

  • CPR/AED Training

The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is an electronic device used to treat Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). SCA happens when the heart stops beating suddenly and unexpectedly. The AED monitors the heart rhythm and sends an electric shock to restore a normal rhythm if needed. These devices can prove critical by potentially saving a life if used within a short time frame after SCA occurs. According to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, every minute during SCA that passes equates to a 10 percent reduction in the chance for survival.

DPS is working to place AEDs in all schools with qualified staff members certified in CPR and AED training. With every school containing AEDs, a minimum of five certified staff members will be onsite to respond to medical emergencies. AEDs are portable, battery-operated electronic devices that come with easy-to-use instructions and functions. Placing AEDs in schools is yet another step by DPS to increase our community’s safety and well-being.
