According to the ACLU, “Zero-tolerance” policies criminalize minor infractions of school rules, while police in schools lead to students being criminalized for behavior that should be handled inside the school. Students of color are especially vulnerable to push-out trends and the discriminatory application of discipline. We ask you to consider the below situations before you call 911.

Is there an immediate threat to cause serious bodily injury or death?
If yes, a mandatory referral to DPS Department of Safety and Law Enforcement is required.

Is there a firearm involved?
If there is a firearm on school grounds, in school's possession, or if there is a threat of harm that is real and immediate, mandatory referral to the Department of Safety and Law Enforcement is required.
- Possession of a firearm includes handguns; rifles; shotguns; any weapon designed to, or may be converted to, expel a projective by the action of an explosive, any destructive device, cindluing explosive, incendiary, or poison gas device.
- This does NOT apply to objects such as toy guns, facsimilies, cap guns, bee-bee guns, and pellet guns.
