    MLE SPANISH LANGUAGE COURSES

Do you need more support to increase your Spanish Proficiency?

We offer four levels of online Spanish Language courses. These 12-week online courses are free to DPS staff and are taught using an immersion-style, communication-focused approach called Comprehensible Input. Through storytelling, humor and connecting, games, reading, and authentic conversations, you will develop automaticity in the most high-frequency language structures in Spanish. There’s no memorizing, studying, grammar charts, or required speaking—although language will be “falling out of your mouth” naturally by the end!

    Class difficulty level descriptions:

    Level 1 Beginner

Choose this level if you have absolutely no background in Spanish or if you know a few discreet words and phrases. This class assumes NO prior knowledge, moves very slowly, and targets the top 10 high-frequency Spanish vocabulary structures that will set you on your path to proficiency! You'll be understanding full stories and conversations by the end!

    Level 2 Novice Low/Mid

This level is perfect if you have just completed the Level 1 Beginner course and are ready for new content but prefer moving at a nice cozy pace! This is for students with a little Spanish experience up through roughly 1 year of high school Spanish, OR for anyone who is just the most comfortable taking it slow! Assumes prior knowledge of some very simple basics (the "Top 10" from Beginner)

    Level 3 Novice High

This class is for learners who can understand simple messages on a range of high-frequency topics when the pace is slow, and lots of context support is given. Great for those with roughly 1-2 year(s) experience in Spanish classes or for anyone with more Spanish language background who is the most comfortable taking it slow.

    Level 4 Intermediate

You have quite a bit of Spanish exposure under your belt and can "get by" in understanding and expressing a wide range of messages -- even if you use some messy Tarzan speak to do it! (Go, you!). You can follow what someone is saying when they use simple language at medium speed, even in lower-context situations, and you can ask for clarification when you get lost. You can string together your ideas using simple words and sentences. You might have had two years or more of high school Spanish, classes with Jillian, or other Spanish immersion background. This class will include more open-ended discussion questions, more opportunities for students to talk, and lessons that assume background of basic vocabulary. This is a great place for you if you have several Spanish classes under your belt and would like to improve your fluency and production.

    ELA-S POSITION INCENTIVE

The ELA-S related position incentive is $2,000 annually based on a 1.0 full time employee (FTE). It is paid over 20 pay periods (beginning with the September 22nd paycheck and ending with the July 7th paycheck). The per pay period amount for a 1.0 FTE is $100.00. All lower FTE's are prorated. This is based upon a teacher starting traditionally at the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year.
