The Department of Safety protects DPS' students, staff and physical assets. Led by Lisa Wehrli Interim Chief of Safety, the department has more than 140 team members including investigators, armed patrol officers, dispatchers, emergency preparedness professionals and campus safety officers. The department operates year-round, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
What we provide
Our responsibilities are far reaching. In addition to training district staff in emergency management, we protect our stakeholders from harm and offer guidance to school administrators to enhance school safety in a wide variety of situations.
Our communications center handles more than 30,000 calls for service each school year and also monitors all radio communications between our command and patrol staff.
We train extensively with the Denver Police Department for a wide range of situations. Through our radio communications system, we are able to communicate with every police district in the city as well as Denver dispatch.
We also work in collaboration with jurisdictions across the metro area, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the FBI and the Secret Service.
