Prepare for the 2024-25 School Year
SSPs and their evaluators across DPS have been challenged by the nature of the SLO process for years. Parts of the process that do not work for SSPs include selecting baseline preparedness levels for specific students, "scoring" students on a learning progression rubric, and even aligning standards to objectives for student growth. Imagine, for example, attempting to score a student on mental health.
These challenges have put SSPs in a position to get creative with SLOs in an effort to make them make sense. Ultimately, this has resulted in the SLO process feeling like an inauthentic compliance measure that lacks meaning in practice. With the insight and expertise of SSPs and leaders across SSP departments as a foundation, the SLO process has been replaced with the Measures of Student Outcomes (MSO) process for SSPs beginning in the 24-25 school year. Expectations for MSOs align with the work that SSPs do throughout the year as part of their practice, making the work of tracking student growth measures authentic and meaningful while respecting the true nature of the essential services that SSPs provide.

Measures of Student Outcomes (MSOs) for SSPs
Effective Special Service Providers (SSPs) have goals for their students and implement a variety of services and programs to ensure and measure progress toward these goals. They have a deep understanding of where students are when services begin and the outcomes that are possible for them over time. Effective SSPs analyze data, implement and provide strategic services aligned to that data, and measure how students progress towards outcomes during the school year. They use this data to drive their service and are constantly reflecting on and refining their craft. Measures of Student Outcomes (MSOs) embody these effective practices by helping DPS SSPs focus on high impact criteria, set ambitious goals, and measure students’ progress toward attaining them. This process will yield greater student outcomes by allowing SSPs to strategically plan from an end vision of student outcomes, ensuring that every minute of service is geared toward our district vision that Every Learner Thrives.
