Summer Work Information (Posted 05/03/21)

TO: All Drivers and Bus Paraprofessionals

FROM: Steve Clark, Director Transportation Operations

DATE: May 3, 2021

SUBJECT: Transportation Summer Work

Summer work will be available for all employees to bid in May. Summer school activity is limited to Tuition Out Schools, Extended School Year Programs, School Year 21-22 Shuttle routes and a few other yet to be determined programs. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT EACH PERSON WISHING TO WORK DURING THE SUMMER OF 2021 WORK THE ENTIRE PERIOD NEEDED.

All new and existing employees are encouraged to speak with your supervisor about how this process works and what steps you can take to be proactive in selecting your summer work.   Routes for Summer School programs will be posted electronically May 5th, 6th, and 7th, 2021.

The Driver bid will be on May 10th and 11th, 2021 each day from 10 AM till 1 PM.  Drivers who marked wanting to work will bid a work package based on seniority.  If you cannot be on-line to participate in your bid, provide bid choices according to contract language.

The Paraprofessional bid will be on May 12th, 2021 from 10 AM till 1 PM.   Paraprofessionals who marked wanting to work will bid a work package based on seniority.  If you cannot be on-line to participate in your bid, provide bid choices according to contract language.

The Extended School Year (ESY) will be held June 7, 2021 thru July 2, 2021.   It should be noted that all summer work will be scheduled out of both Hilltop and Northeast Terminals.   Employees will be required to report for work one day before the start of their route for bus cleaning and route familiarization.   For example: ESY starts on June 7, so bus cleaning and route familiarization would be on June 4.

While employed in support of summer programs all work rules as outlined in the “Employee Handbook” are in effect, with slight clarifications to summer extra work posted on the Transportation electronic bulletin board.  Attendance is important; therefore, employees assigned to summer work must attend work on a daily basis for the entire period.  PERSONNEL WITH PHYSICAL RESTRICTIONS, WHICH PREVENT THE PERFORMANCE OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS, MUST BE CLEARED FOR FULL DUTY PRIOR TO THE DATE OF THE BID.

Employee contact information must be kept current with the department.   After the initial completion of the seniority list, new and vacated Summer School routes will be posted in the terminals each Wednesday at 7 AM and will be pulled down at 7 AM the following day.  The employee who has seniority and is eligible to bid the work will be contacted via telephone; and, will be given till 4 PM on Thursday to respond.

It will be the sole responsibility of all personnel to remember the starting date of the route he or she selects during the bid.  Employees will not be contacted.  If an employee does not report to work for route familiarization, they will lose their bidded route.   That route will be given to the next person waiting for work.

NOTE:  If you are a new employee, see your supervisor to get some insight into the summer work experience.  We look forward to working with you this summer.

Thank you,

Steve Clark
