RE:       Exiting the Bus While Fueling

It has come to our attention that many of our employees might not completely understand our fueling procedure. Please consider this memo an important safety reminder. When a bus is being fueled, every employee needs to get off of the bus-- except for the designated employee who is doing the fueling. This important safety measure helps ensure no one accidentally drives away while the bus is still being fueled.

Here is an excerpt from the Employee Handbook:

“When a school bus is actively being fueled, all employees except the designated employee doing the fueling must remain off the bus.  The designated employee is the only employee that can move on and off a bus that is actively being fueled.  The definition of ‘actively being fueled’ is the nozzle to the gas pump is inserted into the bus gas tank receptacle.  It does not matter that fuel transfer is not in-progress.   As long as the nozzle is inserted into the gas tank receptacle, all employees except the designated employee doing the fueling must remain off the bus.   Once the nozzle is removed from the bus gas tank receptacle with the intent to stop fueling operations can employees enter the bus.  This does not preclude the bus operator and/or the designated employee doing the fueling from ensuring the gas cap is securely fastened to the gas tank receptacle once the fueling is complete.”

Please take time to thoroughly review the Employee Handbook. It’s important that we all understand and follow the procedures set forth in the handbook. If you have any questions, please speak with your direct supervisor.
